February 24, 2020

For Immediate Release

The SAIT Students’ Association (SAITSA) in conjunction with Students for Consent Culture Canada (SFCC) and the Alberta Students Executive Council (ASEC) has publicly released the attached document regarding the standardization of sexual violence prevention policies on Alberta post-secondary campus’.

A copy of the document can be found here.

ASEC Chair and SAITSA Vice President External Garrett Koehler is credited with bringing the nine practical and progressive recommendations contained in the document to stakeholders in Alberta’s public post-secondaries, as well as key government representatives since 2018.

Developed over several years by student leaders across Canada, the SAITSA and SFCC recommendations received this response from Government of Alberta Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides:

“Students have been clear that more needs to be done to address campus sexual violence. This is a priority for our government and I am committed to working with our students and institutions in their efforts to end sexual violence on campuses, because every individual has the right to be safe, respected and free from harm.”

ASEC is committed to working with the Government of Alberta, institutions, and all post-secondary stakeholders in the development of an advanced education system which is protective of the rights and safety of all students.
